Huntly Small Bore Rifle Club
A target shooting club based in Huntly in the heart of Aberdeenshire.
Target shooting is a sport for everyone; we are proud to welcome people of all ages, sizes, abilities and aspirations.
Many of our members come to enjoy taking part without the pressure of big events, working instead to improve their abilities within the club where the main competition is with themselves, trying to get that great score we all want! Others want the thrill of tense competition and work to be selected for teams.
Age is no barrier; we have members aged from the early teens up to our recently retired Chairman Jack Henderson, in his early nineties! All our members are police-checked and should be able to show that they are responsible and safe.
Physical challenges may make life difficult at times, but there are many ways in which persons with disabilities can take part in our sport, ranging from seated shooting using a Bench Rest rifle, to Blind Shooting using sound to aim at the target. We are pushing hard to make our club as inclusive as we can and have a program of improvements to the club to make things even better for those with further needs.
COMPETITION INSPIRED
Competition is at the heart of the sport of target shooting, whether it is a fun shoot at Christmas, various League competitions or full international events.
We have many members who represent the Club in local competitions, members who represent the County in national competitions and some members have taken their skills all the way to the top, representing their country on the international stage. The club has Scottish Internationals at all levels up to Commonwealth Games, who bring their skills and training back into the club and share them with everyone, from first-timers to shooting veterans.
Our Chairperson is currently Sheena Sharp, a multiple Commonwealth Games Medallist with two Gold Medals and a Silver from the Melbourne and Manchester Games and has been a key factor in the development of the club and its shooters for the last few decades. Lenny Thomson reached the Finals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and will represent Scotland at the Pershing Cup in the USA in 2022. Our young Tier 2* athlete Brogan Smith brings the benefits of regular squad coaching sessions back into the club by sharing insights from the training and experiences by coaching members, giving hints and passing on what he’s learned.
